After having updated to firmware 3.0.0.4.380.4005, I've noticed that my router is going through multiple reboot cycles when it's first powered on.  After 6 or so reboots it seems to finally connect to the DSL modem and everything works fine from that point on.  I've since upgraded to 3.0.0.4.380.4180, but the problem is still occurring.  Nothing fancy about my setup, simply have a DSL modem on WAN port and one computer plugged into a LAN port.  Prior to that update bootup on the router was pretty instantaneous (seconds), whereas now it takes several minutes to finally connect and function.

I can't say for certain that .4005 was the specific problem (I hadn't updated the firmware for maybe 6 months before that), but it certainly seemed to introduce the problem for me.

The system log for the reboot is included below, I didn't see anything particularly telling:

Just as a follow-up to this, I've since been trying different physical ports on the router, but that doesn't have any effect on the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on things to check (log information, etc.)?

I have just upgraded to a new internet setup; consequently, my ASUS router is now cascaded off of another router (not doing any PPoE login, etc.).

Unfortunately, it is still exhibiting this multiple-reboot behavior on startup, so it appears this problem is unrelated to anything happening with regards to the WAN port/configuration.

Is there a better place to report or get help with this?  I have also tried e-mailing router_feedback@asus.com, and have heard nothing back.

I contacted ASUS support and got a reply, which was to reset the settings to the factory default and do the setup again.  My results and response is below (and I would be curious to know if others having the issue get the same result)...

I performed the reset and re-configuration as outlined, and had some interesting results. 

One additional note is that performing the reset as described (unplugging all network cables, but NOT the power, then holding the reset button for 8 seconds) only reset the settings to the factory default, it did NOT do a firmware reset to the original firmware; the firmware version remained the same as before the reset (3.0.0.4.380_7266).  It did clear the settings, and going through the setup again provided some interesting behavior.

1)  Doing just the basic setup (initial auto configuration, password, etc., but none of the additional detailed configuration changes I had before) seemed to at least limit the problem to a single reboot on startup (which may have been the "normal", previous behavior).

2)  Once I fully configured the router with my previous settings (I did not do a settings restore, I re-entered all of the information manually), the multiple-reboots on startup problem reappeared.  So it appears it there is something about my particular settings that is causing this to happen (with recent firmware).  I do have quite a few configuration settings changes that I made, to trying to go through them one-by-one to see which one (or combination of settings) will be a fair bit of work.

After some more back-and-forth with ASUS support, I finally bit the bullet and did some laborious debugging to try and isolate what's causing this, and I think I've found the root cause of this startup reboot issue.

I normally operate my router with the WiFi radio turned off.  If I turn off the router with the radio disabled (which is how I normally use it), then when I turn it on again the multiple startup reboot issue happens.  However, if I turn the router off with the radio enabled, when I turn it on again it starts up without the multiple reboots.

For now, it's easy enough for me to turn on the radio before shutting down, then turn off the radio once it's started up.  Obviously, it would be good for the firmware engineers to have a look into why that's happening and hopefully fix it in an upcoming firmware update.

Hope that helps anyone else having the same issue.

This appears to have been fixed with the 3.0.0.4.380.8120 firmware update.  I can now power off the router with my wifi turned off, and when I power it back on it doesn't have the multiple-reboot issue.
