UPDATE 3: Uploaded optware.asus with latest Download Master (3.1.0.77) and Media Server (1.0.0.26). I have not deleted packages "lamp" and "mediaserver2" (first is a apache server, second is another version of media server) because maybe they are installable apps in other routers or perhaps required for other functions; neither "cloudsync",  because i think that is used in routers with cloud storage, like RT-N66U, for example. IMHO this version seems a bit slower than DM v3.1.0.75 / MS v1.0.0.22.

Get optware.asus from sendspace (it will download these packages: asuslighttpd v3.1.0.70, Download Master v3.1.0.77 and Media Server v1.0.0.26) and replace yours in your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists:

UPDATE 2: All testings i made, in several hard drives, were ok, so i share the file that works for me. The trouble was in dependences, because download master requires asuslighttpd package installed. Replacing optware.asus in your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists with this file should be fine (I hope so, again). You can compare both files and write Sorry again if not works for you.

Get optware.asus from sendspace (it will download these packages: asuslighttpd v3.1.0.68 Download Master v3.1.0.75 and Media Server v1.0.0.22) and replace yours in your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists:

Download link:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qkbsn1

I don' t delete whole old post for maintain coherence in answers.

UPDATED: This is not 100% reliable. I tested in a 2.2gb usb drive, with FAT32, and AsusWRT v3.0.0.4.342 loaded from firmware restoration utility.
Yesterday I made "24000" succesfully tests. Today, in a 500gb ntfs drive, this procedure fails. I'll try to install an older version (i used it in a first succesfully attempt; maybe it installs another files that 3.1.0.77 does not, that remain in system, therefore, i'll give a try). Sorry for expectations.

Hi, apparently the solution (or problem) resides in optware.asus file, located on Route your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists.
The procedure can be as follows (it worked for me):
1. - Delete the folder asusware.
2. - Try installing applications. If the process is not complete succesfully, verify that (at least) the file "optware.asus" exists in path your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists. If exists edit it. If not, it can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/LiveUpdate/Release/Wireless/asus_base_apps_mipsel.tgz. Decompress all its content within your_usb_drive_letter\asusware. Now, edit the file.
3. - Download archive "Packages.zip" from ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/LiveUpdate/Release/Wireless/Packages.zip. Unpack it in a temp folder and edit the file "Packages". Locate text blocks concerning to downloadmaster and mediaserver and copy them (asus maybe upgraded.
4. - Now, back to your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists\optware.asus file, replace these lines:

by these ones (this is an example, try to replace these lines by yours, perhaps asus updated the asus base apps files to a higher version since i write this tut):

Verify that preserve the format and there are 2 line breaks between paragraphs after the end of each package block and after last line (maybe required).
Save your_usb_drive_letter\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists\optware.asus, plug usb drive in router and try installing the apps.
Sorry if this procedure was not ok for everyone, it worked for me. Maybe someone with more knowledge wants to improve this fix.

Greetings

I forgot one important thing: under windows don't use notepad. Better use another text editor, like notepad2, for example, to obtain a the best line wrapping and make changes without errors.

hyperlinks don't work for me....http 404 errors....

I think if someone would RAR the asusware folder (it doesn't contain private information) then we could just apply it to our drives. I'm definately gonna make my own backup folder of it , if and when it comes online, for future asus server issues...

I tried your method and installation still stops at 99% (media server).  Thanks anyway.

Zainday, i just clicked in ftp links and they worked ok. Maybe were down when you have tried (that ftp server fails often).

After copying the folder 'asusware' that worked in a FAT32 flash disk to a NTFS hard drive, I tried an installation from this hard drive and failed again. Only got to work (twice) when granted full permissions for user Everyone and when made him owner of asusware folder (ticking checkboxes of replace owner and inherit permissions in all active sub).

Definitely, the problem and my supposed solution, both, are too bizarre for me.

i've posted this on other forum. Works ok >
>1. try installing download master or media server on your router, it will fail but it will create an asusware folder on your usb device.>>2. download this file>https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13605628/optware.asus>and copy it to usb driver:\asusware\lib\ipkg\lists\optware.asus via samba (network share)>or you feel a bit geek telnet to your router - you must have it enabled from advanced - administration>and paste this into the cli:>wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13605628/optware.asus -O /opt/lib/ipkg/lists/optware.asus>
>3. reboot router.>
>after your router boots up, try to install again the media sever / download master. should work now. enjoy

Thanks, i don't think so, at least the second, hahaha. Only i'm somewhat stubborn, especially when who should fix a problem does nothing (apparently, i hope).
Have a nice day.

Hi Luisaca,

I got it to "work" using Notepad2. Not sure if it was fluke or actually a difference from using Notepad vs Notepad2.

However,

Using the file http://www.sendspace.com/file/uqw3r3 from your post above installs download master. Download Master does not accept any magnet link.

Nor can I click "USB applications" on router menu. It only brings me to an empty page (App_installation.asp). The same goes for Parental control (Parentalcontrol.asp) just takes me to an empty page.

I can not activate a Samba share. I can click to activate samba share but it just gives me an icon spinning (wheel) waiting to finish something, but it never does.

I have no idea why it is so hard for Asus to get this function to work properly.

Any suggestions are welcome.
