Hi,

The bios indicates a CPU temperature for the Intel 2600k is 58 C at idle.  PC Wizard indicates the cores at 35-36 C.

Can anyone explain why there is such a big difference?

Hi D..

That is usually due to power management protocals that are available in the Windows operating system... C States, Halt states, etc...  Those sorts of management features are not running in the BIOS.

Hi D..

They are all correct.... What you see in the BIOS and in Asus Probe are the temperatures to be concerned with as they report the Tcase..  TcaseMAX for your processor is about 73c.

The way I understand it is in BIOS all 4 cores are running at max speed and at max voltage, which is probably around 1.2V. Kind of like stepping on the gas pedal when the car is parked.

In Windows, depending on the loading, it can drop the CPU down to only 1 core running at 1600MHz with roughly 1V. Hence the lower idle temps in Windows vs BIOS.

Hi Bob,

From what I see posted of the web with the stock Intel cooler, my temps are fairly normal.  I can try cleaning off the thermal paste and apply some Artic Silver and see what happens.
