I personally can see zero reason why I'd pay to buy a new product for better software. So far as I'm concerned, the problems so far with the Asus box are all pretty much limited to software issues, and I fully expect that they'll fix those. If they don't, and I
have to" buy an upgrade, then I'll look elsewhere. I don't mind buying new hardware for something that it takes hardware to upgrade, like faster CPU, more memory for expanded functions or the like, but for the issues which I have with the HDP-R1, this should all be fixable within software.

If the HD2 firmware will get around the .MKV header compression issue, that's a big reason to move. So far I see one post saying that it didn't and one saying that it will. I suppose that I'm currently annoyed enough to give this a try on spec, so long as I would be able to revert if it doesn't help.

In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is!

Well i remuxed a video I had with mkvmerge with audio and video compression turned on. The video played but the audio didn't. It could just be the audio encode on that particular file. Testing with another file.

OK I muxed a different file, with audio and video header comp on. Same result. Video plays, audio doesn't.

I will add though that files that I downloaded from the internet that didn't play before are working fine. I will also add that muxing with default settings is resulting in a playable file, so:

1. It would seem that the header comp problem is solved, at least for the default muxed files and what you downloaded from the internet.

2. If you are muxing files on your own, don't use zlib comp for audio stream!

For those of you that have already installed this, there is a revision 3 version out.

I have also tested the mkv header compression. I muxed a mkv with default settings (mkvmerge GUI v4.40), and with the HD2 firmware and it played fine. Tested the same file with HDP-R1 v1.33N and the result was audio only - no picture.

So yes the HD2 firmware fixes the header compression issue

Poker there is an easier way to update the bootcode. just put version 1.21 or 1.24
I'm presently running 1.28 on my O!Play HDP-R1 NTSC and the bootcode is 17. I've also tried with both 1.21 and 1.24 and it's still bootcode 17. Please share your experience, I'm not familiar with telnet and would like avoid it. Thanks

For the initial bootcode upgrade..they say you may be able to try the regular system upgrade method but the "soft reset" (telnet) method is recommended. Read first post of the link for "upgrade firmware"

Upgrade firmware found here:

http://www.moservices.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=98

It is not hard at all. If you want to visually see what it should look like, I put together a .pdf with some screen shots. Links below

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ERYSV2V0

or

http://www.filesonic.com/file/52898811/Upgrade_to_bootcode_23.pdf

As for HD2 firmware, I am currently trying 1.12.06 rev 3.1 (blue screen) found here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SOVAOZGI

From the thread found here:

http://www.moservices.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=221

Update: After testing above HD2 firmware (rev 3.1), I don't like it! Colors seem off, glitchy lines on screen when switching media etc.

Go with rev 3 blue screen found here:

Hey Poker,

Thanks for detailed instructions. I stumbled on your post and ended up upgrading my HDP-R1 to HD2 rev 3.1. And so far i am loving it.

Got a question tough, maybe HD2 remote have two separate buttons for play and pause. But HDPR1 stock remote that i am using have only one button to play and pause.

So lets say you are playing youtube video if u hit pause button it doesn't do anything. It does work if u r playing standalone avi file or something but on youtube or other online services it does'nt work.

Is there a way around it? Any kina magical fix :-)

Thanks again for detailed instructions.
