I bought a Q9400 CPU to replace my E6600 to get a some more life out of P5W DH Deluxe. I also upgraded my RAM and CPU cooler. The problem is my computer is in a constant reboot cycle with the new CPU installed. It will get to the log-in screen most times then shut down and reboot in an endless cycle.
I am using the 2801 Bios which is supposed to support the Q9400 CPU. I have removed the mobo battery to clear the CMOS several times with the new CPU installed. I'm running XP Pro 32 bit, 4gigs of Corsair XMS 2 dual channel PC 6400 RAM. Nothing is overclocked. I have done some searching and other people have had the same problem. If I put the E6600 CPU back in and clear the CMOS once again, my PC is fine.
Can anyone please help? I already bought the CPU, and want the quad core capabilities. DO I need to get a newer mobo like the P5Q Pro?

Hi b..
There are some issues running certain 45nm processors on this board... you may be familiar with this FAQ.
http://support.asus.com.cn/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5W%20DH%20Deluxe&product=6
Does anything change if you try to boot with just one memory module installed..?
Usually, clearing the RTC will resolve thses problems but you have done that a number of times with no good results. I assume that when you did your clearing you had the system unplugged and after removing the battery, moved the discharge jumper to discharge and back again.
Can you enter the BIOS..?..

I haven't tried booting with just the one memory module. I unplugged the system while removing the battery but I did not move the discharge jumper. I can enter the bios when it's booting. It looks like a normal boot cycle, but will only get as far as Windows log in screen most times, then shuts down and starts again in an endless cycle.
I will have to try again using the discharge jumper and one stick of RAM if needed. I had the CPU in and out about 5-6 times yesterday, swapping between my old E6600 and the Q9400. I was leery of getting a quad core for this mobo even though it states it will support this one with my bios version. Looks like my fears were justified. :(
I currently have it up and running again with my old CPU. I had the mobo out yesterday so I could install a new Coolmaster Hyper 212 CPU cooler for my upgrade.

If I put the E6600 CPU back in and clear the CMOS once again, my PC is fine. ----unless the OS is corrupt you should be able to go back to the old cpu without problems, also theoretically you should have been able to go to this new cpu with no problems----clearing CMOS after changing a component should be viewed just as second nature as having to reboot windows after installing software
Can anyone please help? I already bought the CPU, and want the quad core capabilities. DO I need to get a newer mobo like the P5Q Pro?----why didn't you go for the Q6600? I'm sure that one would work fine in this board, it's the 45nm that seems to cause problems

I would have gotten the Q6600 but it's no longer available to me unfortunately. I have 2 HD"s one with XP Pro installed and one with Windows 7 (32 bit) installed, and have the boot problems with both OS's. The OS boots fine when I put the E6600 back in.

Well, I gave it one more try and did what you guys suggested. I re-installed the Q9400, popped out the battery, unplugged the power cord, used the jumper on the mobo to completely clear the CMOS, and tried another re-boot. Same thing happened, endless reboots just before the log in screen. I also tried removing one of the RAM sticks. This also made no difference, same results.
Looks like no quad core for my P5W mobo. I put my E6600 back in and my PC booted right up. Hopefully I can RMA this Q9400 and return it. I don't think I'm going to get a newer Socket 775 mobo to put this CPU in. If I have to get a new one I might as well go all the way and get a Socket 1366 CPU, mobo, faster RAM (running PC 6400 currently) and new video card. and make the money I'm spending more worthwhile.
My P5W DH Deluxe, E6600, Nvidia 7950 GX2 have all served me well for close to three years now, and I have no complaints. Thanks for the fast replies. It's good to know people like you are out there and willing to help.
Regards, Erik U.

I have the same mobo and switched from E6600 to Q9550S. When you upgrade the BIOS the CPU speed change to 333 MHz witch is the right speed for the CPU but not the speed for my original RAM. I changed back to 266 MHz and now it works almost fine but since the CPU clock rate is lowerd you loose performance but you gain stability from the view of RAM. Try this it may work also for you.

HI everybody. I have a similar question regarding this MOBO and 45nm CPU's. I would like to buy
Pentium E6300 dual core 2.80Ghz 45nm(wolfdale) and replace C2D E6300
1.86Ghz 65nm(conroe). Will my P5W DH recognize the new CPU if I flash the newest bios (theoretically)? Will i lose
some abilities and functions like VT (IntelĀ® Virtualization Technology)? I want to install Windows 7 and Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Mode, so i need it right?
PC: Asus P5W DH Deluxe, Intel C2D E6300 1.86Ghz 65nm, 2x1 Geil Black Dragon DDR2 800Mhz CL5, Western Digital Sata2 250GB 7200 8cache, MSI ATI Radeon x1950, Chiftec 450W PSU, Pioneer DVDRW Pata.
