Please note that this thread only applies to boards which were known working when received. Placing E0 stepping CPU's in a board with a bios previous to 0401 can give symptoms of a "dead" board.
My Z7S-WS and two others I know of have quit operating suddenly for seemingly no reason.
I was adjusting display settings when my system experienced a black screen across the monitors (4 monitors) then when I pressed reset the system failed to POST.
After having done numerous BIOS resets and testing other known working hardware (cpu's, ram, power supplies) I have not been successful in getting the system to POST, the postcode reader never shows anything other than "FF".
I have given up on my board and will be contacting Asus regarding a RMA or refund but I would like other individuals to reply if they have experienced a similar sudden death to attempt to find a similarity.

STEvil ,
I also have experienced this 'sudden death' syndrome with my Asus Z7S WS.
My board died after a restart . All was working fine , but after that restart the board doesn't post anymore. Display shows FF , nothing else.
I have tested with different hardware but it's definitely the board that has died.
my setup : Asus Z7S WS E5450 's E0 4x1 GB Transcend 800Mhz ATI 3450 PC Power& Cooling 610w

| STEvil,
Same here. My system shut down 2 times last week while working with Word and on the net.Cpu temps were normal. Then when I tried to restart Vista, it just never came on again. So I pulled the power cord, reset CMOS and tried to power on again. The LED came on, and the lights on the diagnostics card, but nothing on the display of the diagnostics card. Tried to press the power button on the case, didn't work. Tried the power and reset buttons on the GP card, didn't work either.

After coming home from working out of town my programs had locked up but the computer was still running. Thinking it prudent to do a fresh reboot I simply clicked on the shutdown/restart command and that was the last I have seen of my system in a functional state.
The system does not post, never even a glimmer of hope. I have swapped out: gpu's, ram, cpu's, psu's, hdd's. Everything and still no change. The only sign I have that led me to any help on the web was the led displaying "FF" wich I promptly cracked open the user manual to find isnt listed, proceeded to search and come across some others in the same boat as me.
I bought the board itself last spring, and after aquiring the necessary cpu's and ram to populate it I got it up and running this november(ish). It has run fine since, never a hiccup. I waited for news of the snoopfilter problem to be solved before buying it, now I got nothing. Havent changed any hardware or settings in quite some time, weeks probably and in that time have rebooted countless times. Had it running in Vista and Ubuntu 8.10, did everything I asked of it.
-Z7S 2x X5460 4x Kingston 800mhz 4GB FB-Dimm 2x Ati 4870 3lbs of Copper waterblocks that just arrived, custom made for this board... now paper weights.

I don't own the Z7S but am looking at it as a potential upgrade.
However, I have encountered a problem almost exactly as described here. It was on a different mobo, several actually, from different vendors including ASUS, but with the very same symptoms. So I thought I would comment about my solution just in case it might help.
On multiple occasions, my system would not post after fiddling with BIOS settings OR swapping the video card, etc. or sometimes changing absolutely nothing. The mobo appeared to be mute and very dead. I tried everything mentioned above, such as swapping video cards, resetting CMOS, different power supply, all with no joy. The onboard LEDs did show power OK but no post completion. And unfortunately I don't have one of those fancy error code displays
I finally found a solution and got the system to post again by swapping in an extremely old PCI VGA card. This is NOT a PCI-Express card, but an ancient straight PCI video card. The system posted correctly and then I was able to immediately replace the original PCIe card and continue on as before. And I doubt that XP or Vista would even boot or run with one of these extremely old cards, so no point in booting up the OS.
The only thing I can imagine as a reason is that the BIOS just got "confused" with the backplane IRQ priorities, or PCIe bus configuration, or whatever. I can only speculate on the reason. However, this solution has worked for me on a number of motherboards over the years. So I am now in the habit of keeping a PCI VGA card around, just in case.
I think this is worth a try. Good Luck!

11 (eleven) DEAD ASUS Z7S-WS !!! mainboards and counting ....
What is Asus doing about this ? 1. Speed up the RMA procedure? NO 2. Compensate for the overhead this board is costing functioning as server ? NO 3. Try to get a good working BIOS asap ? NO 4. Offering a money refund ? NO
So why did we buy Asus ? Tell us !
For more info on this Hall of Shame mainboard : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=183499&page=61

You should know many people come to the forum only when having problems with their mobos. So, i'm not surprised "11 (eleven) DEAD ASUS Z7S-WS !!! " at all.

11 of the 13 people on xtremesystems.org that own one. Some even have send back to 2 for RMA! The forum was intended to discuss the "power" of these boards to help fight cancer. Unfortunately it turned out discussing the apparent lack of interest of Asus in this board as the BIOS updates are slow and not improving much. Furthermore the RMA department takes months. Not even mentioning the fact that this boardships with a BIOS NOT supporting the new steppings !! Meaning it will not work until you upgraded the BIOS by using a older CPU or sending the board to Asus for a upgrade, and you just bought it. NICE ;( I will never buy a Asus again and will all my company colleagues advice to go Supermicro !
