CPU: Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2

RAM: 2GB

OS: Windows XP Pro sp3

Router: D-link DGL-4300

Nic driver: 5/07/2008,5.694.0507.2008

After upgrading BIOS from 1603 to 1801 the onboard nic (Realtek RTL8111 ) got an yellow exclamation mark in Windows that said that the network card has limited or no connectivity.

The nic doesn’t accept an ip-address from the dhcp server and if I type in a valid ip-address I can’t ping default gateway or anything else on the LAN.

I removed the nic in Windows XP Device Manager and rebooted, same problem.

Upgrading to latest driver from realteks homepage didn’t help.

Re-flashed with 1801, no change.

Loaded BIOS defaults, still no change.

Reverted to 1603, everything works fine again.

Have anyone else experienced this problem?

you just need to re-install the driver for the NIC.

I found the thread below in M2A-VM

"[Problem]DO NOT USE BIOS 1705..BREAKS ETHERNET"
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20080404194101468&board_id=1&model=M2A-VM&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

It seems for 1603 and older BIOS realteks newest nic drivers works fine but from 1705 and forward only older drivers works

When I installed driver 5.658.814.2006 from
2006-08-14 (older than the MB?) the nic works with the 1801 BIOS

Hi!

I wasted a lot of time researching a workaround for this issue.

There are some steps you have to follow to get NIC fully functional on this MOBO with BIOS 1801:

1. Uninstall current NIC driver from add/remove programs facility.
2. Clear Windows registry from "Realtek" NIC related keys and values. Previous backup is a good idea.
3. Delete %windir%\options folder.
4. Search for oemxx.inf files related to Realtek NIC driver at %windir%\inf folder and delete them. Excluding Realtek audio driver inf files.
5. Flash 1801 BIOS revision using Asus Update from Windows.
6. Shutdown the system.
7. Unplug de power cord several seconds.
8. Power on the system.
9. Enter BIOS setup and set proper values before booting OS.
9. When Windows detects Ethernet Controller, cancel the new hardware wizard.
10. Install Realtek NIC driver 5.658.814.2006 from 2006-08-14:
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/lan/rtl8111B/Realtek_RTL8111B_LAN_x86_x64_V56588142006.rar
11. Setup NIC driver for proper speed and duplex for your LAN.
12. Now, the NIC works with the 1801 BIOS.

Next time, avoid to buy Asus products =(

Regards.

The Fox
