I am being detailed so that hopefully this helps someone else with a similar situation.

In our department we had two basically identical A8Js notebooks. On one Vista SP1 installed just fine, but of course on mine it did not.

After I installed SP1 the resolution of the display dropped to 1280x720 (1400x900 is native). The monitor is also listed as Default Monitor (not PnP Monitor like it should have been) with no other options. Uninstalling SP1 fixed the problem.

I tried solutions from all over, to include installing the latest BIOS and Graphics Drivers (from both ASUS support and laoptops2go.com). Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Rolled back to earlier drivers. Wiped the drivers. None of these attempts worked.

I did find a solution; here is what I found. I found a post referencing ASUS's FTP sites to download a new graphics driver. (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&id=20070517163722091&board_id=3&model=A6J&page=3&count=34) The one listed was the European server which was much too slow for me, so accessing the USA server worked much better.

Here are the addresses:
Global: Could not log in.
USA: ftp://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/nVidia/Vista/
Europe: ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/nVidia/Vista/
China: ftp://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/nVidia/Vista/ (not tested)
Japan: ftp://dlsvr05.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/nVidia/Vista/ (not tested)

Downloaded the latest driver(V7.15.11.6749[60MB]) and installed it. That worked.

After installing the drivers you suggest in anticipation of SP1 upgrade I discovered one problem, I Couldn't adjust brightness.

After lots of wasted time searching for a solution by myself or on google I found out why. I had upgraded the bios from 2.10 to 2.11 and some people seemed to have problems with 2.11 bios and brightness. So I downgraded to 2.10 and voilà problem solved. To downgrade you have to do it from the inside the bios, there you will find an option to upgrade the bios from a file. The windows program won't let you downgrade your bios.

Hope it will help someone. Now I can finally have an updated nvidia driver and SP1 whithout my A8JS doing weird things.
