Hi,

I have the P5W DH with all SATa controllers set to Standard IDE.
I have two drives that I switch in BIOS to boot either XP Pro or Vista Ultimate.
Both the XP Pro drive and the Vista Ultimate drives are hooked to the standard SATA ports 1 and 3.

I would like to switch to AHCI mode but of course the OS will not boot as it does not have the AHCI drivers installed.
Is there a way to force the install of the AHCI drivers while running in Standard IDE mode?
I know I can do an inline repair install but I'd rather not if there is an easier way.

Thanks!

edit: the reason for this is because when I added a drive to the ez-raid port 2 it made my drive on sata port 3 slow to a crawl.
I have since moved the drive to the jmicron port and speeds are back including the drive still hooked to the ez-raid connector2 which never lost transfer speed.
I'm thinking that AHCI may be my problem that caused slow transfer but after reading here and seeing how some are seeing sudden loss of drives I begin to wonder!

There is but its not 'officially' supported nor guaranteed.  You have to get the controller using the AHCI driver first, then shut down and put the firmware (BIOS) into AHCI mode.

Crap, I started to describe how to do this but then I noticed this board has three damned RAID controllers from three different vendors.  WTF?  Oh well, you can give it a try, but I don't know how this might impact the other controllers.

If using the integrated Intel ports via ICH7R, download the Intel AHCI/RAID Drivers (latest) here:

http://s89934018.onlinehome.us/DRIVER/iata78enu.zip

Extract/unzip to some temp directory.  Open Device Manager and Expand the Storage Controller category.  Right-click once on Intel 82801xx Controller and select Update Driver.  Select 'Not this time' to Windows Update > Next > 'Install from list or specific location' > Next > 'Don't search, I will chose the driver' > Next > Have Disk.

Point the Wizard to the temp directory containing \iata78enu\Driver\iaahci.inf and click OK.  Select "Intel 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller" (ICH7R) and click Next or OK to install.

If you don't see "82801GR/GH" (ICH7R) or it reports no compatible hardware found, you may need to uncheck 'Show compatible hardware' and try again.

Restart and change the Intel SATA controller to AHCI mode in BIOS.  Save and Exit.

Again, this is not guaranteed to work so plan accordingly.

I have balls so I went at it like it was nothing.
I'm happy to report that it worked fine!

It did make my XP install find new hardware after the first boot with the drivers and asked for a restart but that worked well.
I did a hidden device view of device manager and now see a greyed out 82801GR/GH AHCI controller which I'll remove but other than that, no problems!

Thanks much for your simple suggestion!  I do not recommend that others try this without a full backup first however.

Edit:  I did the same under Vista and it worked fine as well!

Vista required two reboots however.
One was for the new driver for the AHCI controller and the second was for the new drives hooked to that controller even though tehy were the same.
All worked fine!

Hey there,

I am planning on doing a fresh XP install on my rig in the next weeks.

I want to get AHCI working on this SATA drive that I have.

I am a bit confused as to how it works. Is it just a matter of simply setting it in the BIOS then installing XP, or is there more to it than that?
