i know this has been discussed before but can anyone update me?
I've just built a new rig with a Samsung hard drive connected by SATA (but in IDE mode), and having all sorts of problems - blue screen of death (F number all refer to harddrive problems) and inexplicable freezing (you can move the mouse curser but cant click) - that seem to happen when copying or installing large files.
tried the basics, changing cables, updating BIOS, re-install and different SATA sockets.. but still no luck. Do I have a compatibility issue?
Is there a fault with my motherboard - should I take it back?
If i get a replacement harddrive, any suggestions as to what would work well with my board?
Is there any fixes? different setups? should I try AHCI?
Thanks
ps. I'm running XP 32bit

| This board is known for serious incompatibility problems with various hard drives. Most of the time drives work if you can use a jumper to switch them in SATA1 mode. Samsung's have the worst of the problems. Seagates works perfectly.

Thanks for your post - whats the difference between SATA1 and SATA2?
Going to take a look at Samsung's website and see if i can find details on how to switch it to SATA1 - will post my results.

| The difference is in the communication speed of the drive and the controller. SATA1 is for 1.5GB/sec, SATA2 for 3GB. But in practice there is no much performance difference because 1.5GB is adequate for today hard drives.

The Samsung drive won't work better in SATA1 on the P5K premium. I had the same problem as you. I finally installed a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (very good drive). And I also bought a PCI express card with SATA2 connectors (SIL3132) and attached the Samsung on it. Now I use the Samsung as a backup drive. Everything works fine, now. Regards.

I had same problems with samsung. Sent it back as not compatible and got full refund. then tried Hitachi worked fine but 1.5gbs it auto swithches to this speed. which is no quicker than my old sata 1 drive.
I called Samsung and was told this drive may be incompatible and they didnt have a fix.
I will try Seagate soon as I used one on my old Asus p5w board and it was silent and fast.
Regards.

| I had a call to ASUS support again today and told the guy that many of us are experiencing this problem with the Hard drives.
He told me that the problem is well know to them, but they were not able to reproduce it during their testing. He said the only solution he can offer for this problem is to RMA the board.
He added that the newer productions of this board possible solves this problem.
He said most of the complains coming on this issue are from the earlier versions of this P5K Premium mainboard.
He told me how one can check when the mainboard was manifactured. You can look at the first two digits of the serial number; for example for mine the first two digits are 7A which means October 2007. The first digit is for the year and the second digit is for month (1 to 9 for January to September and then A, B,C for October till December).
