Hello, i purchased a DRW-1814BL MultiDVD-Ram drive, it worked fine, installing windows XP, drivers, etc from cd, until i made by first lightscribe write.  Aftwerwards, no other lighscribe media is recognized, no CD-ROM discs, will only read/write DVD information.  I bought the OEM drive from Newegg, i didnt look at the retail version reviews there for this same drive.   Seemed 90% of the reviewes posted shared the same experience.   Ive reinstalled the firmare, etc etc, chalking it up to a bad drive.  Seems like a common problem, anyone else experienced this?  Im thikning of just having them send me a different brand of drive, but id like to stay with ASUS, ive had good experiences with running their motherboards for the past 6 years or so.

Hi!
I have same model, but retail version. Also, I have same problem!
I burned only one DVD and my 1814BL now can't read any disc (CD or DVD)!
This is ASUS's mistake, I think...

Hi!

I had the same bad experience with my DVD writer. Afther wirting the first light scribe sisk it went bad. I've try tu update with the firmware but no change. I've unistalled Nero 7 and installed NERO 6.6.0.14d from my previous DVD writer. Now it works fine and I have no problem with lightscribe disks(DVD's and CD's).
I think this problems are from burning software not hardware.

Hello,
Well, at least I'm not alone. My 1612BL did the same thing. Worked great on the 1st label burn, then a series of circles on the next, then a blank, then it stopped recognizing any disc. Now that I have 100 LS discs WTF can I do but get another LightScribe unit.
I'll try support, but has anyone gotten anywhere fixing this problem? Or do you have to keep trying units until you get a good one?

I did find one solution at another site.
"Take the unit out, and through it against the wall."

This is too bad... First time that we've had an issue with Asus products; or this particular product and winblows (XP). I've had 7 of these already returned to us within the last 2 weeks. Personally I haven't had any problems with them (at least not under Linux). It does not seem to work with the Nero software (for Linux) though. At least I can switch to any other burning app and it works fine. Under windows however, after the first time it's accessed (just a simple read of a CD) it refuses to read another one. So like a previous posts mentioned, it's NOT the hardware (so Asus, you're still good:), but the software you use.

I've tested these drives under Vista as well as Win2K without any problems. So XP users, might be SOL for now.

Forgot to add, at this time there is no need to flash it if it works fine. You will not get a huge advantage unless you're using Vista. The first thing a lot of people do is flash it and it seems to attribute to the problems accessing regular CD's.

Il try changing the software I use but I doubt thats the issue. Reason being is that I can no longer use a bootable CD on startup of my PC (So before XP is even loaded). BIOS settings remained unchanged. I have a feeling that the first lightscribe I did has permanently damaged the drive in some way. Whether or not NERO caused a bad lightscribe im not sure.

Tell me FooManchu, did you happen to test those 7 drives returned to you? and did they work properly?

I just bought this drive from Newegg too, I was fine until I started using the lightscribe utility.  Now the drive won't recognize DL discs (which is a main reason i bought it) and it won't recognize lightscribe discs (which is the other reason i bought it).  I have not tried CD's yet.  I use the actual lightscribe utility to burn lightscribe, so if it's a software problem it's most likely with the ability of the drive to reconcile with the software users are using.  I mean, if it can't deal with the actual lightscribe program for lightscribe, what are we supposed to do?  Asus needs to patch the firmware and stop blaming customers for using a variety of programs, it's their responsibility to make them as universal as possible.  I understand a peice of hardware having compatability issues, but this is ridiculous.  I am going to RMA it back to newegg and get another one and try my luck.  I doubt I'll use lightscribe again until I see a patch is done.  This is sad for me, I've always trusted Asus products implicitly.  I should have researched it further.
