Hello,

I was hoping to get some help with a problem I am having with a newbuild based on a P5N32-E SLI board.

HD is Hitachi Deskstar 7250 (SATA 500 gb)
Optical drive is Plextor 755sa (SATA)
2gb ram Crucial Balistix
eVGA 7800GT
Seasonic M12 700w
Intel e6700

The system loads to bios fine and all components seem to be recognized.
I then booted from the Windows CD to install  XP Pro but when I attempted to format (slow) the HD the process took about 30 mins to get to 1% complete, and stopped progessing after it reached 2% comlete.
Next, I repeated the process but used the NTFS (quick) format route. The format worked and Windows proceeded to install. However, when the Desktop was about to load, I got a blue screen indicating:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
Then the system rebooted, repeating the cycle and blue screen.
I then tried to reformat the HD using Darik's (on Ultimate Boot Cd for Windows). It too, was not able to format the HD, it took 30 mins to complete 0.4% of the HD and the thruput was constantly going reduced as time passed. Nor was I able to format from the c:prompt.
Booting the ubcd4win disc (as above) leads to a Stop: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot.

Hi

Cut and paste the error message into the microsoft home page seach window. There are a couple of links to information about this error. They suggest a hardware problem (incompatibility or bad disk etc).

Good luck,

H

Thanks, I will try to ascertain if the HD is faulty. Is there anyway to confirm if it is a damaged drive?

Hitachi has a nice utility that I used to diagnose the problem.
Apparently I have a defective device. Excessive Shock. Nice....I hope Hitachi will fix it under warranty.

Thank you sir.

Keep in mind, most pople using the 680i chipset are having intermittent SATA corruption errors. Until nvidia/asus fixes it, theres not alot you can do.

I'm pleased to report that after installing a new hard drive everything is working smoothly with this system.

Follow-up:
Now that I got the computer up and running, I experienced several crashes while trying to copy data from a CD (using sata) to the HD. I got a blue screen a few times and a reboot once, then I stopped and used a workaround. This may be linked to the problems some other users are experiencing.

I copied the files onto my laptop and used Foldershare to copy them over to the desktop.
