Both my brother and I bought the P5RD1-VM in early June.  I have a Pentium D 930, two 1-gb sticks of PNY DDR400 ram, and an ATI X1800 pci-express card.  He has a Pentium 4 630, two 1-gb sticks of Kingston DDR400 ram, and an ATI X1600 card.  We both use the onboard sound.  I have the latest (1003) bios, and I believe he does too.

The boards fit nicely into a mini case and overall I am satisfied.  Unfortunately, we're both having some odd slowdowns using Windows XP Pro.

Basically, after using the computer for an hour or so, one or more processes being taking a lonnng time to load, or are generally slow.  For example, I'll be listening to music, running one or two instances of Windows Explorer, Firefox, and TextPad.  Then Firefox will refuse to open another instance, or Textpad's scrolling through a document becomes choppy and annoying, or my music program (Winamp or MediaMonkey) has trouble finishing a song.

Games are particularly bad.  Loading sequences in Rome Total War almost always cause this kind of slowdown in-game, and almost all other games choke and spew out static at seemingly random intervals.  Or sometimes the game runs fine but the music is out-of-whack.

Everything will go from silky-smooth to excruciatingly choppy in about a second.

Nothing is exactly reproducible as is the problem shows up "randomly," and a reboot nearly always solves it.

My brother describes the behavior as if his machine is "running out of ram."  But system resources indicate only 20-30% of the 2gb used.

My only clue was that when Firefox would hang-up (one of the more common problems), system resources shows that it was using 50% of the cpu (one entire core on my Pentium D), and ballooning in ram usage.  I thought maybe the chip was overheating and causing it to throttle down, but ThrottleWatch 2.01 shows nothing like that.

Someone suggested that Windows XP doesn't handle dual-cores properly, but my brother has a single-core P4.

I've redone Windows.  I upgraded (and even tried downgrading!) the sound card, video card, and chipset drivers.  I changed the BIOS versions (now I'm on 1003).  Windows is fully updated on both machines, and there is NO spyware, viruses, etc etc.  The computers are also over 1000 miles apart, so there is not any local monkey-buisness either.

At this point, I'd be happy even to hear that someone else is having the same sort of problems, as well as what you've tried.  Recommendations would be great, too!

If you don't have any issues like mine, could you say what other hardware you have?

Thanks for any help!

I have the exact same problem as yours.

My computer become extremely sluggish after running after an hour or so.

At first, I thought there may be some program eating up my memory. But after closing all the programs and the windows process manager showing 99% idle, my computer still got very sluggish even just for browsing the file using the explorer.

I am very disappointed with this motherboard, I got the 2GB->1GB Ram issue, and then worked under a extremely noisy fan environment for months without knowing that it is actually a bug and I need to update my bios. And then since I don’t have a floopy drive, I tried to use the update program provide by the CD, but it just never work and I finally use my USB card reader to update my bios, which is never documented in the manual. And then now the mystery sluggish issue….

I find that my computer work "more" normally if I unload one of my RAM (I have 1GB x 2), so it is very possible that it is an memory issue, can you tell me your computer configuration? Maybe we can figure it out what the problem is. I am not a hardware geek , so what I have done is just blind guess….Hope anyone could help.

Well, at least I know we're not alone here.

I'm glad to hear you have a GeForce... I have a Radeon and thought maybe it was a driver problem, but not anymore.

I now have a new PCI SoundBlaster card, and disabled the onboard sound, it's not that either.  I also just re-installed Windows to clear off any old drivers for good.  As an aside, I tried using the 64-bit version first, and it was realllly sluggish during even during install, so back to 32-bit for me on this board.

I read on the Newegg.com reviews of the board that someone was having ram problems which were fixed by switching to Crucial top-brand ram.  Well I don't feel like spending 200 bucks to save a 65 dollar board.  I'd replace the board if I knew I could find a different model that worked.

Anyway, I'm using two sticks of PNY 1gb ddr400 ram.  I know that this board only supports a single channel, but that shouldn't cause an issue.

I ran Memtest86 from a floppy and revealed that my ram speed is a puny 950 mb/s (!!).  That's less than a quarter of what it ought to be.  So you might be right about the ram problem.

EDIT:  By the way, did you only have this problem after upgrading the bios?  I have only ever used the latest version 1002 for very long.  Maybe they broke something.

Hi, nice to see your post again.

> By the way, did you only have this problem after upgrading the bios?  I have only ever used latest version 1002 for very long.  Maybe they broke something.

Well, you are actually lucky, because I bought the board with a older version of bios, it turns on that the old bios is very buggy, it make my CPU fan RPM extremely high (as I mentioned in my last post) and it can't recognize 2GB ram in the first place (1.5GB in my case).

I realize the sluggish problem only after updating my bios to 1002, happily seeing that the bios showing my 2GB ram. It turn out I was happy too earliy.

As you also have 2GB ram as me, with a different graphic card, the best explanation for me is that they only do half of their job of debugging the BIOS, such that superficially the bios has no problem with 2GB ram, but actually the very problem has still not be solved.

I try to contact them with the online support form for weeks, but everytime I filled out the long form and submit it, there was always error saying that the server cannot be connected....May be you are right, we could just simply change the board....

What's the normal ram speed for the DDR400 ram? May be I can also run a ram test to see what I get.

I took your suggestion of removing one 1gb chip, and the problem seems to have "disappeared."  I really don't know exactly what could be wrong in the BIOS, but everything is pointing that way.  The question is, what do we do?

If I know Asus is working on a solution, I deal with 1gb for a while, but not forever.  We really need to hear something from them.

The normal speed on DDR400 ram is 3.2 gb/s (I thought it was more, but 950 mb/s is still pretty slow).  Memtest86.com has a good test application, but it runs on a floppy, so you might have to do your usb drive trick to get it working.  Sandra from SiSoft will give you this information, too.  I'll run it with only one chip in just to check.

Hi McMillan,

Well, at least we can find out where the problem is, without killing the wrong guy. I just post a new post and hope some ASUS staff would come across and ideally solve the problem, though, I don't think it is realisitc at all. May be wait for few weeks, after that, buy a new board...

Anyway, please drop a post here if you find any useful information in the future, I will keep checking to see if there is anything new.

Nice to chat with you.

I will not be buying from Asus again unless they solve this problem.

A short term "fix" is to remove half of the ram so you only have 1gb installed.  There is some kind of problem with having 2gb, despite what the manual and advertisements say.

me too. This is the first time i ever buy a ASUS mobo. What is ur mobo setting for Northbridge?what you choose for graphic adaptor?IGD? PEG/IGD?or PCI/IGD?

I do notice if u choose PEG/IIGD instead of PCI?IGD,the POST will read 2GB memory. However, the performance are still lacking down.Sluggish!Better use 1 stick rather than 2...Kinda weird solution eh?

I wish ASUS techies could handle this problem quickly..

Hi, the same problem here.
I have changed my old motherboard after two years, because broken, and the company that buil my pc, give me back this Mobo.
I was running with 2x1 Giga of ram, S3 PC 3200 DDR1 400, and all was ok .
With this Mobo, the first time was not reading the 2 Gig, but only one... upgraded the bios, and the ram was all there, but, as the pther guys said, with two Gig of ram the pc is running like i have 64 Mega of RAm.
I have tried to run in the normal way i use the pc, some prgram open, IE open, media player running, and with 2 Gig the CPU was loaded at 100%!!!!
Take away one stick, and .. magic, all is ok , running again my ususal configuration, and the CPU is loaded max at 30/35 %, a big difference eh?

In the beginning i was thinking that maybe was that my ram is not listed in the model tested by Asus, but now, reading this forum, seems that is not this the issue.
I was also thinking to try and buy 2x1 Giga of Kingston or Corsair, but i will wait until i will have a response from Asus or from some of you to solve this issue.

BTW, if you read on the manual the specification of the RAm tested, you will find that only 4 brand have been tested for 1024 giga, Kingston, Corsair, Trascend and Nanya.....

Could be this the problem?

I hope that Asus will give us a response about this...

My kind regards to all

Stefano
