Ok, I read through all the threads and see, that nobody found a solution to make Splendid and Power4Gear to work under Windows Vista.

On my device it works now. It seems that the programs just do not startup properly (bug in the installation procedure?)

What I have done:

a) First of all make sure that the ATK Utility works fine. I installed in following order:

  1. ATK0100 driver (download the beta one as newest one does not have all files)
  2. ATKOSD2 (I think this is not needed???)

b) then install Splendid and Power4Gear.

c) Make a shortcut in your startup folder to the acmon.exe file to be found in program files\asus\splendid\

d) Make a shortcut in your startup folder to the batterylife.exe file to be found in program files\p4g\

To set up Power4Gear settings you can use the P4GXui.exe in that folder.

I think the ATKOSD2 is a new on screen display. When you start it manually (program files\atkosd2\atkosd2.exe) then for splendid and power4gear you get nice indication when you use FN+C or the P4G button.

Other things:
  1. the button to rotate the screen does not work
  2. fingerprint scanner is very poor in recognizing (this is a hardware issue - cheap scanner)
  3. the dvd drive was constantly ejecting the cds - the reason was that the plastic cover was bended easily when holding the device and thus pressing the eject button. SOLUTION: remove carefully the plastic cover and put some small cut paper (fold it 4 times - this is thick enough) between the knob and button of the plastic cover (I used a sticky tape to fix it there)
  4. the supplied dummy for the DVD Slot can be fitted with a standard 2,5" SATA HD - this is very nice
I will post updates as soon as I discover new things.

:)

If you upgraded from XP to Vista did you run the Asus driver CD that came with the Vista Upgrade?

When I did my Vista upgrade, I had only installed the Vista CD, then manually installed all the Asus drivers, and had some inconsistency like yours. I uninstalled all the ATK drivers, then run the Asus driver CD install, and all is well now.

I did not make any upgrade. I also do not have the Asus drivers CD.

Windows Vista Business was installed on a cleanly formatted harddrive. All drivers and software I downloaded from the webpage.

That is most likely the source of your problem, as it appears (from my experience) that downloading the drivers from the Asus site and installing them manually does not fully work.

Did you buy this system new, or from an existing user? If it was sold with Vista on it, it must have come with an ASUS driver CD. If it was sold with XP but without the free vista upgrade, and you are now installing Vista on it, you should try to get the ASUS driver CD from ASUS.

I am also thinking that the reason downloading drivers from the Asus site and installing them manually does not (fully) work, could be because there is a specific order that we do not know of.

I would advise to contact Asus and ask them
A) If you can get a Vista driver CD from them
B) If there is a specific procedure to use with the downloadable drivers to make sure the install is fully operational.

In Austria the R1F is available only with Windows XP. The notebook was bought after the Vista Upgrade offer by Microsoft finished.

Actually, installing drivers from the webpage is not definitely the source of the problem.

I have 10 years of experience installing new setups and as for Asus hardware I always used the latest bios, drivers etc. from the webpage. I can not imagine, that the drivers cd has more actual drivers than on the webpage.

Does your rotate screen button work under Vista?

Except a non working rotate screen button and the wacom tablet refusing to work from time to time (which seems to be a general problem of the hardware), everything else is fine.

Yes my rotate screen button works with Vista.

I was just offering you my experience. I too have been working with computer all my life, and the fact is that when I upgraded to Vista and installed all the drivers from the Asus site, I was left with a couple of the function keys not working properly. Running the driver setup from the driver CD did fix my problem.
The driver CD does have a lot more things than on the Web site, but some of it relates to other systems. As I mentionned it may not be that something on the CD is missing, but only that there is a specific order of installation.

And of course your problem may have nothing to do with it.

Here is what happened to me:
I reinstalled vista via the reimage disk provided. it asked me to insert the second disk. I did so, and the script window came up, as usual. This froze i guess, because an hour later, there had been no progress. I rebooted and a nice clean install of windows vista came up. standard asus branding and stuff but no asus-specific utilities. Screen rotate did work, as i think it is hardware based. I went to the asus web site and downloaded all the stuff. it installed ok. The biometric app was all happy, the TPM program is still showing "Security Platform state is 'Initialized with other OS'". I am sure I can figure that out myself.

-Splended does whatever it does after i manually started, as instructed above, which seems to me nothing useful. Fn-C works. with OSD.
-Power4Gear works once i manually started it, as instructed. the awesome little power button to the right of the wireless slider does not work. this causes a tear in my eye, as this was a reason to by the computer. that, and nonfuctioning buttons bother me.
-Function buttons work, with the exeption of the volume buttons. Mute, volume down, and volume up all show action on the OSD, but do nothing in Windows. They even worked in Ubuntu by default.
-Wireless console app works, once I put it into the 'startup' folder.

If anyone knows how to get the button to work, help would be nice.

Also, the mail LED only works with outlook. Does anyone know how to get it to work with a web based mail like gmail? i want to somehow sync it up to the Gmail notifier or google desktop.
