Hi there, I'm using this router with Virgin Media UK, flashed to factory default settings Firmware 1.0.1.4o for United Kingdom.

I'm having an annoying issue where the router looses the WAN connection on occasions for 30 seconds then kicks back in. During the time of inactivity I get the "You have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N56U" error page.

It only does it every few days, but it's starting to annoy me :(.

There's nothing wrong with my modem, runs direct fine. It's a cable modem, DHCP based.

I've copied my event log bellow for further investigation:

I am having the same problem and I have been getting it since I got the router.

I am also on Virgin Media with a VMNG300 modem model no E08C015.01.

I get this every day I can make it happen by opening multiple bookmarks but today it's happening just by going to Apple Trailers and just like yourself it's really starting to annoy me.

I never had this problem with my WL700gE so I do not think its the modem.

I have tried all the firmwares and still the same problem all the way up to 1.0.1.4o with no luck.

The only thing I have found on another website is to put another router or switch in between the modem and the router but what’s the point in that.

I even looked into getting the Superhub (which they want to charge me for) as a modem replacement but other people are saying that this has a whole load of problems of its own 1 being with very high ping’s and when they changed back to the modem that I have everything runs a whole lot quicker (they are not using the same router as myself) so I don’t want to change the modem unless the model that I have is to blame and that a later revision does not have this annoy bug.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm on TWC in the US using RT-N56U. The last couple of days the router keeps dropping the WAN connection. I upgraded to 1.0.1.4o firmware (previously on 'm') but that didn't solve my issue. It got so bad that I eventually had to remove the router and plug straight into the cable modem...

Hi Tony, this all came around because of the SuperHub incidentally, I was having so many problems with it and it kept dropping the wireless.

So went back to my standard 50MB VM Hub. It's not at fault, this is definitely down to a firmware fault.

I contacted Asus today and a supervisor is going to call me back shortly.

This needs to be ticketed as a known firmware fault.

It would help if they made firmware tailored for different continents US, UK, EU, Asia.

There are many differences at play.

I'll keep posting my findings.

Phil - I'm on Virgin too and all 3 (!) of the rt-56n routers that I've had have had this same problem. The first 2 were unusable as it happened regularly every couple of hours which is why they went back. My current one - from another supplier - still does it but only once every couple of days which I can live with. I think it is a firmware issue too - the 14o is definitely better than any of the previous firmware so I'm hopeful that Asus will make it even better in the near future.

Thanks for the input sirshambling, at least I know I'm not the only one with this issue.

I tried setting both dynamic and static IPs and they both loose the WAN lease after a few hours or so without warning.

Just to be sure I had a VM engineer call out and he said the Hub I have is working fine (I have the VMNG300 Hub).

I hope this is fixed soon enough, I don't want to exchange the router as the wireless and features are by far the best I've used in any router.

I am VM cable user and have the same problem with my new RT-N56U, I installed and updeated the latest firmware without any problem but soon internet started dropping every hour.

I tried to fix it many times but all failed before I did factory restore last night because I messed up the wireless setting. After the restore which fixed the wireless and also I haven't see any connection drop for nearly a day. But I am still caution and keep checking, hope the problem will not happen again.

I have just purchased a RT-N56U router and have a 50mb Virgin Media connection.

My router also disconnects with the error message "You have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N56U" and then reconnects after 30 seconds or so. I have updated the firmware to the latest and also followed suggestions of setting the ip to static but it made no difference and still disconnects constantly.

The weird thing is that you can play a online game for hours but as soon as you use something that uses the internet port then down it goes. This means that online Steam games won't work. The most basic feature of any router is internet access and I'm afraid it seems Asus have concentrated too much on looks over functionality.

I have reset and played with settings for a couple of days and have got so frustrated that I have now boxed it up and reverted back to my old router. It's a shame as it's a nice router and ticks all the boxes except it's no good for internet access. I will check back here to see if Asus are going to fix the firmware. If not then I'm afraid I will have to look at other brands.

I sent in a support ticket 6 days ago. It says to expect a reply within 48 hours and after that it will be seen as urgent and dealt with straight away.

I haven't heard anything at all and can just assume that Asus are not wanting people to buy their products. They are certainly on my blacklist from now on. I am using another router (non Asus) and it's running fine and has been for days so I am now returning the RT-N56U for a full refund.

Good luck...I hope you manage to all get your routers sorted.

Dan

My router (the 3rd I've had) has now taken to dropping the connection constantly while I'm trying to access Youtube. Impossible to use. I've tried all sorts of setting changes but nothing will make it stable on Youtube.

So it's back to my trusty Linksys - rock solid.
