i understand that the Q9650 and Q9550 are compatible with the Rampage Formula. i want to get the Q9650 but they all have suddenly vanished.. so i will probably end up with the Q9550. i have an ASUS Silent Knight2 CPU heat sink/fan, i think it will probably work OK on the Quad. i made a case, it is 14"x10"x9" with a 180mm high volume Scythe Silverstone fan pulling a lot of air through it.. the fan is rated up to 150 cfm. i had to make a scoop on the fan side of my MOD case to divert the exhaust flow up. i will need to update the BIOS.. i haven't ever updated them in 3 1/2 years. i heard it was easy mess up the board permanently, i was hoping they would fix that system.. the computer i built for my wife does that automatically. can you give me a good link for dealing with the Bios.?? I'd appreciate that, i read you have to use the 801, maybe by now there is another, i don't know. . will the Asus built in gear box OC the Q9650 CPU, or do i need to manually OC it. the Q9650/Q9550 can be OC'd to 3.4 without increasing the voltage. i don't think i need more than that. thanks for any input...

Assuming you actually need a BIOS revision, then the EZ Flash feature that is built right into the BIOS is the best and safest method.  It is described in your manual..

Generally, raising the front side bus frequency is the easiest way to overclock the processor...

i have the BIOS from 4.10.08 probably 408 i am getting the Q9550 CPU, i am collecting information to set up my RAM for the new quad core. i need to know what BIOS i will be using. do i use the current 1001 Bios update..? i don't have the Manual, i was setting up the mobo and it wasn't working, it was a pathetic Chinese translation.. i was told here to go to the forums to find out what to do.. there was a good Rampage club at Overclock.net i quickly got it going. i don't think it is a good idea to use anything out of that manual. especially for doing something that can destroy my board. i am sure there are links to better tried and true methods that have developed in the last 3 1/2 years. I made a MOD Case. ASUS Rampage Formula X48. Intel Q9550. Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Silent Knight2 CPU cooler. 8 GB OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 1066. 1TB WD Caviar Black, Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2 1.5Gb crossfire. ASUS VW246H 24" Wide Screen. Cosair 750 watt PSU. OPTI UPS Battery Back Up. Logitech G500 mouse/Icemat Pad

I don't quite understand your comment about not using anything out of the manual...?

If you need to do a BIOS revision, then go for 1301...
