Hello all,

I just wanted to share my experience, maybe it will help others.  Just built a new workstation running Windows XP Professional X64 Edition on an ASUS P9X79 WS motherboard and Intel i7-3930K processor.

The Intel RSTe driver in the support downloads was causing my motherboard/SSD to identify as SCSI and thus interfering, causing errors, with my Samsung 830 Series SSD and its Magician software for manual TRIM.

In searching for a solution, I came across the MSFN.org forums and there found the expertise of "Fernando1" wherein he modified the Intel RST v11.2.0.1006 (which supports Windows XP 32/64-bit) driver by adding in the Intel X79 hardware ID's.  The modified driver is working perfectly on my system.

You can find my discussion with Fernando1 on the MSFN.org forums discussing the Intel RST issues on Windows XP here:

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/107504-integration-of-intels-sata-ahci-and-raid-drivers/page__st__1280

On/around page 65 you should find a download link to the modified Intel RST v11.2.0.1006 driver.  This modified driver should be applicable to all X79 motherboards.

Perhaps ASUS will add it into the SATA downloads section for Windows XP operating systems.

Hi A..,

IRST 11.6.0.1030 is the first IRST version to include support for X79 boards, so modifying 11.2.0.1006 isn't necessary.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) 11.6.0.1030, dated September 13, 2012
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21852&keyword=%22Intel+Rapid+Storage+Technology%22&lang=eng

Includes Release Notes.

For:
Windows 7 32bit/64bit
Windows 8 32bit/64bit
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2

The drives are seen as SCSI also with this version, but that doesn't affect the function of either my single drive SSD or my RAID 1 volume.

Thanks for the reply, but as you noted above from the release notes Intel RST v11.6.0.1030 does not support Windows XP (32/64-bit).  I am using Windows XP Pro x64 Edition.

It was my understanding from the MSFN.org forum and elsewhere, that the Intel RSTe AHCI driver made the SSD's show up as SCSI rather than SATA and thus breaking the Win7 TRIM command to an SSD.  In my case it was causing problems with the Samsung utility that performs manual TRIM.

Anybody wanting to use Windows XP (32/64-bit) in AHCI mode on an X79 board should use the modified driver-- until Intel releases an official v11.6.x update that supports Windows XP.  I think the modified driver should also work for the other operating systems listed under the v11.2.0.1006 release notes... this was just the last RST version supporting WinXP.  :-)

11.6.0.1030 were also modified by fernando for the X79 (incorrect INF i think). These are the one i use, and it seems they are supported in XP 64.

Since 11.5, the drives appears as SCSI devices, it seems to be the new norm.
TRIM is working for me in W7, but it should be checked manually, since having all registry and fsutil flags Ok (or not) is not enought.

There is a way to check TRIM is this thread (post #5, you'll need an Hex editor):
