I'm going to upgrade to an E8500 cpu from my current E6600. I'm also replacing my Ultra PC4200 533MHz 4-4-4-12-16 ram (2GB) with G-Skill PC6400 800MHz 5-5-5-15     part number: F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ.
This kit comes with 2 2GB sticks for 4 GB. I dual boot Windows XP and Vista. Does anyone know of any problems I may encounter? Ulrich, Lombardo, Epidemic..any ideas or thoughts? I did upgrade my BIOS from 0901 to 1301 in advance of these parts arriving. Thanks guys for any suggestions.

Hi

The cpu will run fine even on 09xx bios, As for the 800 mhz memory would try to class 4 memory instead of class 5.  You want timings of  4 4 4 12 2t and as far as g skill running, not to many people use g skill so answer is unknown. If g skill has a memory configurator and says it will run should be ok.

You want a memory voltage of around 2.1-2.2 v for best results

Do not understand the 8500 memory as that is 1066 mhz.

Thanks Lombardo,
The E8500 is a new CPU Intel Core2Duo 3.16 GHz. If Class 5 memory will not work, I will exchange it before opening it. G-Skill does have some 4-4-4-12 memory at 800Mhz PC6400. I would rather just order a brand that I can get in 2 2GB sticks that is known to work. I asked prior about the CPU...should have asked then about the RAM also before I ordered...   :-(  Thanks again...H

Hi H

I was not saying class 5 will not work but saying class 4  is better and will have fewer problem will class 4. If  you were ever want to run 8 gigs then class 4 is the way to go.

If were to get class 5 may have to end up running at 667mhz. with 8 gigs.  For what then want for memory these day class 4 is  the way to go.

If you want to overclock  and get a reasonable overclock then class 4 is the way to go.

You probably can get 4 gigs or more off  e  8500 if have good cpu heatsink.
If you do return memory may want to look at patriot extreme performance (LLK) memory. It is a very good overclocker.

Good Luck

Thanks Lombardo.. I got my parts today. 1st cleared CMOS. Installed CPU..ok. 2nd Installed 1 stick RAM..ok 3rd Installed 2nd stick RAM all ok. Reset all BIOS settings. OC'd CPU to 3.8GHz (set FSB to 1600 unlinked)..all ok. Manually set RAM 5-5-5-15-24. Left at 800 MHz. Now in CPU-z FSB to Memory is 1:1. Even with OC my CPU is at 26C right now...thanks again for your advice..Howie

HI H

What memory did you purchase ?????  There is no reason to run memory linked if that is what are doing. Run memory unlinked and set bios to manual.  Should be able to run that cpu above 4 gig/

Did you purchase 4 4 4 12 2t memory ???

That is with the G-Skill memory. I had already ordered it before. FSB and Memory are both UNLINKED. I do have a voltage question though. I left them both at AUTO. ASUS Probe reads 1.41 Vcore volts but Cpuz reads it at 1.536 volts. I just manually set it to 1.41 volts and left the memory on AUTO. The memory is rated at 1.8 volts and the smallest manual choice is 1.92~ volts. Because I'm not OCing the memory, I'm leaving it on AUTO??? Your thoughts?
