Wow this is great!
My X3 720 is running with 4 cores now. Prime 95 is stable now for over 4 hours.
So it looks like my fourth core is in perfect shape.

So i've been fiddling with this motherboard for 2 days. I bought a PhenomII X2 550BE, and unlocked the 2 cores sucessfully, with stress tests performing without a hitch.
The problem is, i've had cold boots and restarts with these types of errors when the system posts:
1. Overclocking failed! Please go back to BIOS and change settings (im trying to remember what it said, so im paraphrasing)
2. HyperTransport sync flood error has occured.
Do anyone get these messages? I am pretty sure this isn't a hardware problem, because these errors come relatively random and without a sign. Windows Event Viewer shows a Northbridge hardware error when HyperTransport sync flood error occurs. The overclocking error usually happens coming out of sleep, which is the lack of compatibility of Windows 7.

yes ... I get this symptom when using unleashed mode with my X3 720 - I work around this by just saving the settings after the message and it reboots fine (a pain in the arse thou). Sleep under Win7 and Vista is broken too when unlocked... (thats even a bigger pain).
I don't however get the HT error...
Did you try setting the ACC settings per core? Is your HT set higher then 2000Mhz? (try going to 1800, or even 1600 - theres almost no gain in pumping up HT speed)
You may have to consider that you have a bad core(s) ... 550's aren't
"guaranteed" to unlock - that's why they're sold as X2. Even so, the
550 is still a great deal.

I get the overclocking message also. It did not take too many times to realize it is a glitch, not a real overclock problem.
Please tell me, how do I get to the unleash selection for the 4th core. I flashed the latest version this morning.
thx

Hello ,
i allready tried Bios 1402 and it dont unlock my 2 cores , with the newest Bios i cant do anything , if i choose ACC Auto => The X3 720 boots with 3 Cores , if i choose Per Core 0% it boots with 3 Cores and so on ! But i never have 4 cores ! The x3 is pretested and it works with 4 cores ! What can i do now?

- make sure your DDR3 memory speeds are rock solid stable (try testing with it set to auto at 1066) - try disabling C1E - bump up core voltage a few notches -- stock voltage is 1.325V (try stock speed @ 1.35V to start, for example - every processor is different, so yours may take less - or more) - try bumping up your CPU/NB -- stock is 1.2V (this can help a bunch with overall stability) - disable both spread spectrum settings (PCIE & CPU) - try setting ACC to Auto - sometimes even a NB (not CPU/NB) bump to 1.36-1.4V can help
the trick is patience - remember these cpu's aren't guaranteed to unlock, but with time and patience, you have a pretty good chance at getting the other core unlocked.
Remember when upping voltages to do each a step at a time -- set voltage, test, reboot, set, retest ... etc I've experienced that some lower voltage setttings actually work better then higher ... these phenoms like cold more then voltage. Maximum 'safe' voltage is around 1.55v -- but I wouldn't recommend going over 1.5v (just to be on the safe side - plus your CPU may last longer). There are differing opinions on this, so take my numbers with a grain of salt.
Don't forget also to keep your temperatures in check ... you should aim for around 28-35C @ idle & 43-50C @ 100% load -- with an aftermarket cooler. If you are using the stock cooler, I wouldn't recommend OCing past 3.2 / 3.4GHz as you will probably will hit 50-60C really quick. Heat = Instability.
If you do manage to get it stable with 4 cores (tested with Prime95, OCCT, etc) at stock speed, you know it will at least work at that those settings. Thats when you can start to O/C if you like.
Also, FYI, when unlocked, you most likely will lose the Sleep feature if using Vista or Win7 (not sure about XP) - also, there may be times when you satart your computer, you will need to do a reboot or 2 to get it started.
If none of this works, you may just have to resign to using an X3 processor - which isn't bad at all... most apps won't see much improvmenet with 4 cores over 3 anyways (especially games).

sometimes the overclocking message may actually mean a failed overclock, so dont totally ignore it (try bumping your core & CPU/NB up a notch or 2 - see if it returns)
to 'unleash', there should be an option that appears when ACC is set to anything except disabled.

After
unlocking 4th core on Phenom ii X3 720 and pushing it to 200x16.5 at
1.45v (58C/44C - too hot to go further with stock HSF), I have problems
increasing HT and CPU/NB beyond 2GHz - in 3x mode, CPU/NB goes to
2.6GHz with reasonable voltage bumps.
In 4x, OCZ Flex EX
OCZ3FXE1600EB4GK (1600 7-6-6-24 1.9v) runs 1680 1T-7-6-6-24-auto with
1.86v, but does not go further. It appears it might be helpful to limit
IGP memory to "SidePort only" and downclock SidePort to1066.

...
Maybe time for you to pick up a
cooler and push it a little harder :D I'd like to see how much of a
limiting factor this mobo is (if any).

First I've replaced stock HSF with ZEROtherm ZEN FZ120 120mm CPU Cooler. It slashed about 10C both at idle and load, but OC results remained almost unchanged with reboots at p95 x3 load. It was a sign that my trusty vintage PSU Enermax Wisper EG365AX-VE(W) should go. It has 26A on 12v rail, but as a P4-era PSU, it has to work heavily cross loaded with modern CPUs and ripple on 12v is probably higher than PhenII and M4A78T-E would prefer.
So I've got CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W 80 PLUS. It is a low-ripple PSU with 41A on the 12v rail, and now my rig is x3 18x200 2000-2000 p95 x3 stable with STOCK voltages and 49c at 25c ambient (OCZ Flex EX OCZ3FXE1600EB4GK-7-6-6-24-1.9v runs 1600 1T-7-6-6-24-auto on 1.86v) with C'n'Q enabled.
Interestingly, the result is the same for x4 with ACC+Unleashed - p95 x4 stable at 18x200 all-auto voltages, while at 18.5x all-auto voltages p95 x4 sends XP into reboot in a couple of minutes. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to replicate the Auto voltages setup with manual settings to make a voltage push - BIOS 1402 replies with "OC failed" for any reasonable attempt at 18.5x! I'm starting a new topic to discuss this issue.
